The Black and Purple Butterfly
For 11 months every year of my life, I will try to keep my life really low-profile. All my life, all that I ever wanted to do was to bland into the surrounding. Like a moth. Believe it is really hard when you speak with a non-local accent, are a head taller than most of the Asian girls and weigh about 20 pounds heavier, you stick out like a sore thumb. Sales girls want to know where you are from, school mates think you are bloody fat, and taxi-drivers want to drive you to tourist traps.
Taxi Driver: Good day.
Me: Good day, I want to go to Ang Mo Kio.
Taxi Driver: Oh, ok can. You been to Sentosa?
Me: Yah, been there.
Taxi Driver: You know where Sentosa is? It is blah blah blah......
Yah hell shut up. I know where Sentosa is. It is a floating little card board near the south of this island. And a tourist trap. I know most of the tourist traps in Singapore because tax drivers are trying all their means to bring me there.
But for 1 month in every year, the socialite in me comes alive. I evolve into this perfect social butterfly who knows exactly where are the best parties and how to make little parties come alive. I can mingle with the crowds effortlessly, crooking up stories to tell, making people laugh and drink myself silly. Almost like a second nature. People who seen me in this one month think that I am a natural socialite who makes a living out of air-kissing everyone, telling them how nice their dresses are and the latest fashion tips. Sometimes to the point where I believe this is the real me. But like the the butterfly when the mating season is over, I ceased to exist.
It is that season of the year. Hellooooo, how are you?
